Bright Pharma Caps: Pullulan-Based Organic Capsules for Advanced Delivery

Patrik Barr, Bright Pharma Caps | Pharma Tech Outlook | Two-Piece Hard Shell Capsule Manufacturer Company of the YearPatrik Barr, Director of Sales
The familiar green and white USDA seal vouches for Certified Organic. For years, capsule shells were made from gelatin or cellulose, standing in the way of that essential certification. With capsules preferred over powders and tablets, non-Organic shells became a credibility obstacle for growing Organic brands.

Bright Pharma Caps changed the game in 2014 by introducing what it describes as the World’s first NOP-certified Organic capsule, Bright-Poly, giving eligible encapsulated products a path to the seal for the first time. Today, the company makes USDA-certified Organic pullulan capsules as well as delayed-release hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC) capsules, which they call their GAR (gastric acid resistant) and conventional HPMC capsules. Behind the Organic line is a manufacturer that makes its own pullulan powder—the material the capsules are made from—builds its own capsule-making machines and stocks the full line in five temperature-controlled warehouses in North America.

“It’s our quality, the uniqueness of our Organic Certification and the quality of our capsules that gives us the edge,” says Patrik Barr, Director of Sales. “They are stronger and run better on the fast-filling capsule machines.”

Solving the Challenge of Organic Shells

The Organic capsule began as a search for cleaner materials, with Organic an ambition the team had long considered. The search took them from gelatin to HPMC capsules made from the cleanest source it could find. HPMC is still made with petro-derived chemicals, so the team persisted.

The search finally ended in pullulan, long used in dissolvable Japanese candy wrappers and breath strips. Bright Pharma Caps had already used it in its conventional capsules, where it forms a strong oxygen barrier against oxidation and runs more smoothly on filling machines. The material is produced by a fungus grown on starch, and the starch in conventional pullulan is not fully Organic. While making those capsules, the team realized that an Organic starch could be sourced and could make the finished capsule eligible for Organic Certification. Co-founder and owner Tess Barr holds more than 35 patents across several industries.

Securing the pullulan was the next hurdle. Bright Pharma initially purchased it from another manufacturer. That created several problems. Making it in-house solved them. Two factories now stand beside the capsule plant in China, producing pullulan from Organic starch under their own control and now with consistent quality.

Sustainable and Bio-Dynamic

Every ingredient in its pullulan powder is renewable, agricultural or agriculture-derived and 100 percent certified under the USDA National Organic Program. Production is water-based with no artificial chemicals added. Residue goes to pig farmers, and an on-site wastewater plant that costs millions purifies water for agricultural irrigation. Bright Pharma Caps’ factory has also replaced its coal-burning steam boiler with an energy-efficient gas boiler, which cuts emissions.

At the plant, capsules are made on machines that the company designed and built itself. Where many capsule lines run on hydraulics, Bright Pharma Caps’ are driven electromagnetically, which Patrik credits with less vibration and tighter tolerances. The capsules run better than most on fast-filling machines.

On the floor at SupplySide Global, Patrik and Tess run the Bright Pharma Caps booth themselves, but when a customer calls Bright Pharma Caps in Hood River, OR, somebody is always on the end of the line, and customers who want to speak with the owner, Tess, can connect with Tess directly or Patrik. They enjoy working with their clients, and some of them who have bought from them for almost 20 years have become friends who stop by the booth to sit and talk or come to Hood River to enjoy the view of Mt. Hood from their office.

Beyond the Organic Capsule

For years, nobody in the industry imagined an Organic capsule could exist, and Patrik was sure that once one did, it would take off. Bright Pharma Caps did little advertising in those years, relying on trade shows while it built up production. That production now includes a second pullulan factory and added capsule lines, which keep supply under Bright Pharma Caps’ own control as orders increase. In the last few years, the company has built its recognition in the industry. This year, it is the Capsule Category Sponsor for capsules at SupplySide Global in Las Vegas.

For its pioneering work in making organic capsules a practical choice for growing supplement brands and opening a path to the USDA seal for capsule products, Bright Pharma Caps is awarded Pharma Tech Outlook’s recognition of Two-Piece Hard Shell Capsule Manufacturer Company of the Year 2026.

Deep Dive

Assessing Hard Shell Capsules for Quality and Compatibility

Plenty of supplement formulations look perfect on paper. The ingredients meet spec, and then the capsules hit the filling line. Shells that vary in size cause feeding problems. The wrong shell material can hurt stability or stop the finished product from meeting labeling requirements. The formula is ready, yet production stalls. Picking a two-piece hard shell capsule maker comes down to what the shell is made of, how it runs on the line and whether supply holds up. Shell material is about more than a vegetarian label. Gelatin is still a staple in pharmaceutical manufacturing because of its cost and well-understood processing. HPMC (hydroxypropyl methylcellulose) and pullulan, the plant-based options, each bring something different. Pullulan, for one, is a good oxygen barrier, which matters for ingredients that oxidize easily. So the real question for buyers is how sensitive the formula is and where it will be stored. Plant-based shells are not all the same. Organic certification is a separate hurdle. A product full of certified organic ingredients can still run into labeling restrictions if the shell does not qualify. Anyone building an organic line needs proof that the whole capsule is certified, down to its source materials. It also pays to ask how the supplier controls raw materials and keeps them consistent from batch to batch. When material properties drift, capsule formation and filling can suffer, and more so as volumes rise. “Bright Pharma Caps makes two-piece hard shell capsules, including certified organic pullulan shells for supplement makers that need them.” Then there is size. High-speed encapsulation machines need consistent capsule geometry to separate and fill shells without constant stops. Batch-to-batch variation means more adjustments and more rejects. Ask suppliers how they hold tolerances and whether their equipment keeps variation low. Better yet, run trials on your own filling machines before signing a large supply deal. Some specialized formulas also need delayed-release shells that survive stomach acid for a set time. Those claims should be backed by dissolution testing. The risks do not stop at the factory gate either. Poor temperature or humidity control in a warehouse or truck can change how shells perform by the time they reach production. Check how the supplier ships capsules and what it does with affected lots. Steady supply matters most when you launch a new product or ramp up output. Regional stock can shorten replenishment times, though capacity plans should follow projected demand, not just current orders. Bright Pharma Caps makes two-piece hard shell capsules, including certified organic pullulan shells for supplement makers that need them. It produces its own organic pullulan in dedicated facilities, so a critical input stays under its control. Its machines run on electromagnetic rather than hydraulic systems, which cuts vibration and delivers tighter dimensional tolerances for high-speed filling. The range also covers HPMC delayed-release capsules, and organic liquid-fill options are in development. Several warehouses handle distribution, and technical support is on hand for capsule-related manufacturing questions. For nutraceutical producers that care most about organic certification, consistent filling and reliable resupply, it is a strong fit. ...Read more
