Mikio Toda, President and Representative DirectorFuso Pharmaceutical Industries’s legacy began in 1964 with the launch of Japan’s first dialysis solution for artificial kidneys. Over six decades, a continued focus on innovation and supply stability has helped the company maintain market leadership and earn deep trust across the healthcare community.
Fuso Pharmaceutical Industries focuses on overcoming the difficulties researchers and clinicians face when developing dialysis therapies. Dialysis patients often contend with more than kidney failure, living with comorbidities such as hypertension, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and bone metabolism disorders. These clinical complexities make delivering effective dialysis solutions particularly challenging.
“We support the efficiency and safety by providing products suitable for the equipment of each dialysis center,” says Mikio Toda, President and representative director.
Fuso Pharmaceutical Industries’s Kindaly Dialysis Solutions offers a wide range of products with finely adjusted electrolyte and glucose compositions tailored to evolving patient backgrounds and shifts in the treatment environment. The flagship series is designed specifically for Japan’s dialysis environment, where approximately 97 percent of patients undergo hemodialysis or related treatments using central dialysis fluid delivery systems (CDDS). Within this system, dialysis fluids are regulated and approved as pharmaceuticals.
A Broad Portfolio of Solutions for Complex Needs
Leading the way in dialysis care, Fuso Pharmaceutical Industries adapts rapidly to advancements in technology and treatment standards. It has launched more than 30 types of dialysis drugs and continues to expand access to essential products that ensure optimal care.
The evolution of its dialysis fluid composition reflects Fuso Pharmaceutical Industries’ close engagement with clinical practices. Its bicarbonate-type dialysis solutions became mainstream in the 1980s, followed by continued refinement of electrolyte balance. Potassium concentrations were reduced from 2.5 to 2.0 mEq/L as managing hyperkalemia gained importance, while magnesium levels similarly shifted from 1.5 to 1.0 mEq/L, both now established as standard options.
A Robust Supply System for Stability and Continuity
Dialysis drugs are essential life-support medicines, and the company’s production and supply system is designed to minimize the risk of disruption. With large-scale manufacturing facilities strategically located in eastern and western Japan, complemented by a nationwide network of logistics bases, Fuso Pharmaceutical Industries has consistently maintained a stable supply, even during natural disasters.
To further strengthen this commitment, it continues to enhance its business continuity plan by upgrading aging production facilities and diversifying its supply chain.
Innovating Treatments for Improved Outcomes
Reliability in delivering clinically effective solutions, combined with a patient-focused approach, guides Fuso Pharmaceutical Industries’ research and development. It works closely with its established network of medical institutions, collaborating with on-site physicians and staff from the early stages of development. Research encompasses dialysis fluid composition, electrolyte and glucose balance and other formulations tailored to complex patient conditions. Clinical needs, patient conditions and treatment outcomes inform product design, enabling findings grounded in dialysis pathology to be applied directly to therapies.
“Through our long history, we have not merely supplied products but have listened to the challenges and requests of on-site healthcare professionals, reflecting them in product improvements and new solutions,” says Mikihiro Toda, executive managing officer of the corporate planning division.
One example is the development of dialysis fluid compositions designed for an aging dialysis population, taking into account disease progression and the use of concomitant medications. The company is also advancing new drug candidates such as DMX-200 for the treatment of focal segmental glomerulosclerosis (FSGS), a condition that can lead to nephrotic syndrome.
DMX-200 was developed by Dimerix Limited in Australia, and Fuso Pharmaceutical Industries holds exclusive development and commercialization rights in Japan. The compound is currently being evaluated in an international Phase 3 clinical trial. Pursuing both improvements in dialysis care and new treatment options for kidney disease, Fuso Pharmaceutical Industries aims to address unmet medical needs and advance patient outcomes.
Expanding Impact across the Care Continuum
The rigor behind dialysis drugs also underpins the company’s broader portfolio of essential pharmaceuticals. Fuso Pharmaceutical Industries produces small- to large-volume infusions and injections that are crucial to daily medical practice, adhering to strict GMP and GCP standards. It also employs automated systems and standardized processes to ensure consistent quality, safety, and a reliable supply across clinical settings.
Fuso Pharmaceutical Industries’ long-term direction is guided by its purpose, ‘Supporting Life, Nurturing Life.’ Fuso has expanded into fertility treatment and assisted reproductive technology (ART). Products for in vitro fertilization, including the HiGROW series, address Japan’s declining birth rate and expand its role across the continuum of care.
Capitalizing on its proven expertise in clinical trust, operational resilience, and patient-centered innovation, Fuso Pharmaceutical Industries has established itself as a leading partner in renal healthcare and is recognized as the Top Dialysis Drug Development Company 2026.
Anchored in decades of dialysis drug leadership and a supply system engineered for continuity, Fuso Pharmaceutical Industries Mikio Toda, continues to advance renal care.
