We launched in 2020 after three years of development in stealth; the premise was to create a collaborative cloud-based platform, as the Atlassian for life scientists,” says Jacob Lee, CEO and Co-Founder of Genemod. Lee explains that life scientists and researchers working on the next life-saving breakthrough therapeutic or vaccine often leverage methodologies that are old school and archaic, utilizing siloed means of data sharing and traditional processes of recording and storing data. They do not find any possibility to use past data and experiments to inform future decision-making. “Our platform allows researchers to record, analyze, and intuitively visualize their projects and inventory in one place – something that has never been done before,” Lee comments. The company launched project management in 2021, allowing researchers to localize and execute their experiments to the web app, create protocol libraries, manage data files while offering users more collaboration options in a hybrid research lab environment.

Next to the hard data is the soft data: “the why.” The soft data is collected by interacting with customers, running hypotheses-focused experiments, and evaluating the feedback from customer support and surveys.
As a testament to the robust capabilities of Genemod’s platform, Lee recalls how Christopher Reid, an Associate Professor of Science and Technology at Bryant University, was able to save valuable time and energy locating data with Genemod. Reid and his team had run their chemistry research lab studying bacterial cell wall metabolism for more than a decade when they faced a new challenge; they lacked an effective method to manage large amounts of reagent data with different team members and storage locations. The freezers were documented on a single laptop that held a local copy of all the reagents—a local copy of decade-long research was dangerous and hard to manage. Only after spending a significant amount of time discovering his inventory could Reid delegate tasks to his staff to begin gathering materials. However, each team member also had to return to the laptop to find their own needed reagents. The lab needed a new inventory software package to save valuable time and energy by making it easier to store, search, and update data. Genemod solved all the key issues that Professor Reid faced by creating a cloud backup of the lab’s data on Amazon Web Services (AWS) to ensure security and dispersed access to freezers. Reid and his assistant could remotely access their inventory and prep and assign tasks ahead of time with improved upfront planning.
Genemod plans to integrate with marketleading products and tools which scientists are already using every day, such as Microsoft Teams and Slack, in the upcoming years. Alongside integrations, the company is also focusing on workflow management and reporting. Genemod intends to double down its efforts toward serving its customers worldwide. The company also continues to support scientists in the ongoing challenge to global health by partnering with multiple federal grants to help with COVID research. “This is something unique to us; we launched at the right time—the beginning of the pandemic. We can certainly leverage our resources and capabilities to this end. We also see an uptick in inventory and project management, as companies have started using Genemod as a collaborative tool across an entire organization rather than just within a team of scientists,” says Lee.![]()
