HOF Sonderanlagenbau has been a trusted one-stop shop in the freeze-drying technology industry for over 35 years. Specializing in the manufacturing of custom freeze-drying systems, loading and unloading systems, and freeze-thaw equipment, HOF is known for its innovation, reliability and dedication to environmental sustainability. Its systems, powered by state-of-the-art technology, are built to perform reliably for more than 20 years.

“We provide reliable, high-quality equipment that consistently fulfill customer requirements,” says Fabian Plaum, sales manager at HOF.

The HOF team comprises experts specializing in various freeze-drying applications in pharmaceuticals and biotechnology. This wealth of knowledge is leveraged to build an end product that is truly innovative and dependable.

In general the freeze-drying process is a very energy consuming process in order to make a product long-term stable and allow for a storage of the product. at hof we are therefore working on solutions that reduce the energy requirements and increase the energy efficiency of the system while keeping the high-quality standards alive

Outstanding, 24/7 service supports that long-term reliability. Coupled with a steadfast focus on cutting-edge technology, HOF is setting new standards in the industry, meeting the evolving needs of its clients while prioritizing environmental protection.

The Future of Eco-Friendly Freeze-Drying Solutions

Going beyond traditional freeze-drying solutions, HOF offers a comprehensive range of services that reduce overall energy consumption, leading to a more sustainable process for its customers. A key aspect is the use of state of the art and energy-reducing refrigeration technology, which saves energy and reduces operational costs. HOF systems do not consume energy when not in use, and are always developed to the latest state of the art technology. This is a massive benefit to clients because it assists them in enhancing efficiency while simultaneously hitting their sustainability goals.
“In general the freeze-drying process is a very energy consuming process in order to make a product long-term stable and allow for a storage of the product. At HOF we are therefore working on solutions that reduce the energy requirements and increase the energy efficiency of the system while keeping the high-quality standards alive,” says Fabian Plaum.

HOF’s expertise lies in manufacturing three key alternative refrigeration methods: hydrocarbons (ethane and propene) through a two-cascade system called CAR6, liquid nitrogen, and the CryoBlizzard technology, which utilizes air as a natural refrigerant. The CryoBlizzard system stands out for its innovative use of air to achieve ultra-low temperatures below -80 °C. This closed cold air machine operates efficiently at partial load and does not contribute to climate change, meeting stringent environmental regulations in both Europe and the U.S.

It is crucial to go beyond presenting concepts on paper with real-world references and prototypes. HOF demonstrates its commitment to thoroughly testing and refining its solutions before they reach the customer.

“Before implementing a new system on a customer’s site, we always set up the technology as an in-house prototype. This allows us to thoroughly understand the system, identify and address any issues, and ensure reliability before moving to the commissioning phase at the customer’s site,” says Fabian Plaum.

HOF’s prototype modeling and manufacturing process is essential for both their freeze-drying systems and the automated loading and unloading of freeze-dryers. With the introduction of new GMP guidelines that mandate automated loading and unloading processes, HOF provides clients with solutions that ensure compliance and can be seamlessly retrofitted into existing setups. This minimizes downtime, enhances operational efficiency, and keeps production lines aligned with the technological advancements and regulatory standards.
  • We provide reliable, high-quality equipment that consistently fulfill customer requirements.

LYOCOM, HOF’s proprietary software for controlling and managing freeze-drying processes, has been advanced to encompass loading and unloading solutions, providing a cohesive user experience. Feedback collected from HOFs clients during installation drives updates, incorporating broader improvements into the standard system. This ensures the software stays current with technology and customer needs, benefiting all users through continuous advancement.

Another standout feature is the SynchroFreeze tool for controlled nucleation. This tool ensures that products are frozen uniformly, reducing the stress on biological materials. This results in consistent ice crystallization and more efficient freeze-drying processes. Unlike other solutions on the market, HOF’s SynchroFreeze tool does not introduce additional molecules into the system, maintaining the integrity of the product and is retrofittable.

By retrofitting existing freeze dryers with this technology, HOF enables clients to achieve higher efficiency and product homogeneity without investing in brand-new equipment.

A Strong Mix of In-House Manufacturing and Exceptional Customer Service

The hallmark of HOF’s success is its unwavering commitment to in-house manufacturing and comprehensive customization to meet the specific requirements of clients in the pharmaceutical and biotechnology sectors. Its in-house capabilities span various engineering disciplines, including mechanical, electrical and automation engineering, allowing for the development of fully customized freeze-drying systems.

Every production-scale freeze-drying system designed by HOF starts with an in-depth understanding of the user requirement specifications. Its engineering teams collaborate closely with clients to define the necessary system parameters and create detailed designs that align with their production needs and site conditions. This process guarantees that each machine precisely suits its intended application, encouraging efficiency and performance.

HOF’s expertise in manufacturing is unparalleled in the industry, particularly in Germany, where it holds the deepest manufacturing density among freeze-drying vendors. This includes the ability to produce critical components such as refrigeration as well as the product shelves of the Freeze-Dryer, which are essential for maintaining product quality. Having experienced supply chain bottlenecks during and after the COVID-19 pandemic, HOF has intensified its focus on maintaining a well-stocked warehouse. Its inventory of over 65,000 spare parts guarantees that critical components are always available when needed.

Once the engineering and manufacturing phases are complete, HOF transitions to the qualification stage.

This comprehensive process begins with a Factory Acceptance Test (FAT) at HOF’s site, where the system undergoes rigorous testing to ensure it meets all specifications. The team then works closely with the client to finalize the system according to specific needs. This approach ensures that the end product is fully compliant with industry standards and ready for seamless integration into the client’s operations.

Throughout the process, HOF’s commitment to exceptional customer service is evident. The team prides itself on offering ongoing support, including 24/7 service availability. Clients can always reach a HOF employee for immediate assistance, and any issues are promptly addressed. When on-site support is needed, a team of over 50 service technicians is ready to deploy, minimizing downtime. This readiness to help clients extends to the entire lifecycle of the products, from initial sales to project handover and beyond–underscoring its position as a leader in the freeze-drying technology industry.

Reducing Long-Term Operational Costs

HOF’s full-service solutions have profoundly impacted their clients, illustrated by notable success stories. One significant project was the installation of HOF’s CryoBlizzard technology at a customer site, marking the first deployment of cold air as a refrigerant in a commercial setting.

Initially requested by a customer looking for a natural refrigeration system, HOF provided comprehensive data, from technical specifications to commercial details. The CryoBlizzard technology was first tested as a prototype to ensure reliability and address initial issues before being implemented at the customer’s site. Despite the higher initial cost compared to traditional systems, a return on investment can be reached by reduced operational costs from this technology.

From initial concept to the final handover, the project spanned three years. The customer now benefits from a state-of-the-art refrigeration system, which stands as the quintessential example of HOF’s ability to deliver innovative, reliable and environmentally friendly solutions tailored to any situation.

Meeting Evolving Demands with Cutting-Edge Technology

HOF’s unwavering dedication to innovation and reliability remains at the heart of its operations and lasting success. For over three decades, the company has consistently provided state-of-the-art technology that not only meets but anticipates and exceeds the needs of its customers in the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries. HOF’s freeze-drying equipment is built to perform and last, providing the solid foundation businesses need to grow. HOF will continue to drive the industry forward, focusing on researching alternative refrigeration methods and technologies to meet the industry’s evolving demands while being stewards of the environment.
