EditorialStacey Smith Editor-in-Chiefeditor@pharmatechoutlook.comDespite being a relatively niche part of the extensive biopharmaceutical industry, contract manufacturing organizations (CMOs) play crucial roles today from manufacturing nearly 30 percent of marketed mainstream commercial products to being involved in early-phase aspects of product development and manufacturing. The biopharmaceutical industry views outsourcing to CMOs as an increasingly desirable option as routine services and products with smaller markets and products requiring novel bioprocessing are being outsourced more often. In new bioprocessing technology development and adoption, CMOs play an important role, regularly being the first to implement new technologies when compared to developer companies. Having worked on more projects and using a wider variety of technologies, CMOs are naturally equipped with greater technical expertise than developer companies. Biopharma companies are now increasingly taking a more strategic view of outsourcing and seeking to outsource as much as possible. Most companies periodically re-evaluate their core competencies and rationally decide how they will manage their R&D, manufacturing, and related outsourcing. As a result, almost every area of R&D and manufacturing is considered a candidate for outsourcing. The evolving mix of biopharmaceuticals in the development pipeline is also expected to increase outsourcing to CMOs, because CMOs often have more capabilities and expertise in new areas of bioprocessing than developer companies. Product types, classes, and the underlying molecular structures of products in R&D continue to diversify. Rather than just familiar-type recombinant proteins and monoclonal antibodies, CMOs are often the pioneers in terms of manufacturing novel products, including antibodies with novel core structures/backbones, antibody-drug conjugates (ADCs), cellular therapies, gene therapies, RNAi, pegylated proteins, and other novel types of products.Successful CMOs continually expand capacity with staff and expertise as the number and percentage of marketed products commercially manufactured by CMOs will further increase, at the expense of stainless steel-based bioprocessing. With more drugs coming off patent, which will increase the demand for new generic drugs, the CMO sector is sure to grow exponentially.Let us know your thoughts.Keeping One Eye Out for Potential Disruptions Copyright © 2019 ValleyMedia Inc.
