EditorialStacey Smith Editor-in-Chiefeditor@pharmatechoutlook.comAlong the timeline, CROs have taken into their fold an expanding cluster of activities. Their entire spectrum encompasses limited clinical trial services to a full-service market characterized by extensive relationships with clients as well as by service offerings that embody the complete drug development process. As clinical trial services are taking up the lion's share in drug development costs owing to the ever-increasing size, complexity, and duration, there has been a major uptick in the amount of outsourced clinical activities to CROs. To stay ahead of the crowd in a growing market with an intensifying demand for services, CROs are looking toward consolidation to form a more comprehensive portfolio of service offerings. Consolidations will inevitably lead to a smaller market with fewer options to choose from, which in turn will force pharmaceutical companies and CROs to forge more long-lasting, synergistic partnerships. As CRO mergers and acquisitions are likely to affect the agility and speed of operations and may hamper efforts to imbibe new technologies, it is evident that there will be a clear divide between generic `one-size-fits-all' solutions and more client-centric service providers in the CRO space. On the technology front, CROs are gaining interest in the value of real-world evidence and other big data sets, which are poised to play an important role in drug development in the near future. CROs and sponsors can leverage this data across the entire drug development value chain to cut down costs and timelines, improve quality, and ultimately increase the probability of success. With the primary role of innovation in efficient drug development intact, CROs are devising new approaches in conjunction with existing, tested technologies and sophisticated analytics for risk reduction and cost savings. This edition provides the much-needed answers and insights in the light of the latest trends and dynamics in the CRO landscape.
