TECH OUTLOOK 6NOVEMBER - 2021TECH OUTLOOKEditorialStacey Smith Editor-in-Chiefeditor@pharmatechoutlook.comThe onset of the COVID-19 pandemic has illustrated that no healthcare system in the world was prepared for any such health crisis. Capacity concerns emerged as hospitals were overwhelmed by the surge of patients who required special beds to treat and contain the infection. With the supply chain badly hit, hospitals reported shortages of critical medicines and facilities, hindering their ability to provide care for patients. Furthermore, there were concerns that fear and uncertainty were taking an emotional toll on hospital staff, both professionally and personally. Many hospitals focused on recommended measures, such as social distancing, and assess the risks and benefits of delaying systemic oncological treatments. However, the challenges of cancer care, which were already enormous before the pandemic, have just become unimaginably more complex. Amid this, doctors of various specialties have begun to debate, discuss, and provide recommendations of telehealth for patients with cancer in the time of COVID-19. Telehealth enabled clinicians to overcome geographical barriers, provide patient care and avoid the risk of infection. In addition, the COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in the rapid temporary deregulation of telehealth services. Specifics include lifting geographical restrictions, broadening patient, health care professional, and services eligibility, relaxing supervision requirements, preserving reimbursement. That said, many of the changes made in routine clinical practice could be embedded beyond the duration of the pandemic. Although vaccinations drives are rolling out on an unprecedented scale and rate, there will be mandated COVID-appropriate behavior and significant time to recalibrate care models as health care professionals and patients adapt to the new normal. How pharma-companies affects the safety and quality of care and how the regulatory landscape will look when the COVID-19 public health emergency is behind us remain open questions that deserve continued observation.
