6 TECH OUTLOOKOctober - 2019EditorialStacey Smith Editor-in-Chiefeditor@pharmatechoutlook.comDrug discovery and development are among the most important translational science activities that contribute to human health and well-being. For the pharmaceutical industry and for patients, so much hinges on the success of research and development programs. The research and development of new medicines is a lengthy process, taking over a decade from the identification of a drug candidate to its introduction to the market. While clinical researchers have traditionally approached clinical trials from a scientific standpoint, more are beginning to approach trials with the goal of conducting scientifically rigorous evaluations with a patient-friendly approach.A major driver of advances in drug discovery has been technology in the likes of automation, imaging, nanofluidics, software, and assay technologies that have accelerated and eased the process of acquiring data. The drive toward greater sensitivity and miniaturization has been a goal in drug discovery and diagnostics. Advances made in the broad field of nanotechnology are being applied to this application.New paradigms such as personalized medicine go beyond a "one-size-fits-all" treatment approach, emphasizing a "tailor-made" concept that customizes treatments to every individual. Primarily centered on oncology, the principles of personalized medicine are increasingly extending to immune-mediated diseases like rheumatism as well cardiovascular, neurological, or infectious diseases. Due to advances in the drug discovery process, target discovery has been undergoing a radical change as the ability to identify mutations associated with disease has been greatly enhanced. Innovations in recombinant technology have opened doors for new biological therapies that are being introduced in clinical development. Over the past decade, there has been a profound shift in the design of clinical trials. The shift trends toward the use of new and adaptive tools to squeeze every iota of information from data gathered in shrinking patient populations. Drug discovery has always drawn influence from advances in other fields and as long as there are entrepreneurs in large companies or startups, innovation will forever be a part of drug discovery. It may be riskier than before, but it is still a rewarding and exciting adventure.Do let us know your thoughts! The Shift toward Adaptive ModelsCopyright © 2019 ValleyMedia Inc. All rights reserved.
