A drug has to go through four stages involved in the drug discovery and development process to be finally approved for use in the market.
FREMONT, CA: The attention on vaccine development owing to the current COVID-19 pandemic has proven that getting a novel medicine from the lab to the patient in the pharmacy is not a quick or straightforward process. While the production of COVID-19 vaccines has been hastened, such procedures typically take more than ten years and cost billions of dollars, with various hurdles along the way. There are, however, numerous present and new solutions for issues encountered at each level of the pharmaceutical development process.

Here are the four stages that are involved in the drug development process:
Drug discovery
The initial stage of pharmaceutical development encompasses crucial activities such as target identification, chemical screening, and lead discovery in order to discover new potential medications. Drug development takes three to six years on average. Because drug discovery efforts are frequently driven by specialized organizations, the data they generate might become siloed and inaccessible to the rest of the scientific community, wasting time and resources on tests and research into chemicals that are unlikely to become authorized medications.
Preclinical
The preclinical stage of drug development entails using animal models to determine how successful and safe the selected small molecule or therapy is in treating the disease target. Because the candidate is either insufficiently effective or carries too much danger, success at this stage often does not translate to the following stage, when medication candidates are evaluated on humans in clinical trials. Alternatives to animal testing are, however, being developed that will more accurately represent the disease in humans.
Clinical
The clinical-stage of medication development is putting a prospective treatment to the test in humans via clinical trials to see how safe and effective it is in the human body. Before a medicine can be sold, it must go through three stages of clinical trials. Phase IV trials, which involve thousands of volunteers with the condition or disease, continue to look at the drug's safety and efficacy after it is on the market.
Review and approval
Despite the fact that the review and approval stage of pharmaceutical development is the final phase, the review team is active early in the process, providing recommendations for any needed adjustments. In the United States, a team from the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) reviews and monitors all studies and protocols relating to the drug. The FDA team is made up of experts in microbiology, chemistry, pharmakinetics, pharmacology, statistics, medicine, and project management, among other scientific disciplines. The FDA is working to shorten this stage of medication development, which can take anything from a few months to several years.
