Cannabis has always played a role in the diagnosis of Parkinson’s disease. However, this time, scientists have discovered something new.

FREMONT, CA: A drug named HU-308 has been discovered by researchers that offer benefits acquired from medicinal cannabis without any side effects for unlocking new diagnosis for Parkinson’s disease.

The drug reduces the side effect called dyskinesias, that causes destructive involuntary movements in the body.

This research has been carried out by the Centre of Neuroscience and Regenerative Medicine (CNRM) at the University of Technology Sydney (UTS) and the Applied Medical Research of St Vincent’s Hospital Sydney.

It has been proved that the effectiveness of mice HU-308 is equivalent to amantadine, which is the only available treatment for dyskinesias. Moreover, the treatment will be more effective in combining HU-308 with amantadine in comparison to the drug used alone.

However, one problem is that all cannabis preparation is not the same, and cannabis has various effects, some of which may not be healthy for Parkinson’s patients.

Cannabis functions on numerous brains’ receptors—CB1 and CB2. The receptor CB1 is mostly responsible for causing the psychoactive effect.

The drug, HU-308, operates only on receptor CB2, allowing medicinal privileges to be administered with any psychoactive effects like highness or drowsiness.

Usually, medicinal cannabis makes people high and can impact daily activities. However, according to the research, HU-308 is a vital prototype drug that doesn’t interfere with patients’ daily activities.

HU-308 reduces inflammation in the brain, which affects the neurons and immune cells. This enables the immune cells to support normal neural function again, instead of inhibiting it.

Primarily, the study displays that drug HU-308 can be equally effective and useful for those patients who are not able to take amantadine. Secondly, taking the combination can provide significant benefits to the patients who can tolerate amantadine as compared to taking either drug alone. This means that a much robust treatment will be available in the future in comparison to the current one by ultimately prescribing both.
