They can even be used to prevent the function of abnormal proteins in cancer cells. This is also a targeted therapy or a cancer treatment that targets a tumor's specific genes, proteins, or the tissue environment that aids tumor growth and survival.
What is oncolytic virus therapy?
Oncolytic virus therapy destroys cancer cells by using viruses that have been altered in the lab. The genetically modified virus is first injected into the tumor by the physician. The virus then replicates itself inside the cancer cells, and these cells burst and die. As the cells die, proteins are released, signaling the immune system to attack any cancer cells of the body that share the same proteins as the dead cancer cells. The virus does not infect healthy cells.
What is T-cell therapy?
T cells are immune cells that can fight against infection. T-cell treatment involves the removal of T cells from the blood by a physician. The cells are then given specific proteins known as receptors by a laboratory. Those T cells can recognize cancer cells due to the receptors. The regenerated T cells are reintroduced into the body, and they can identify and destroy cancer cells. This therapy is commonly known as chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) T-cell therapy. Fever, disorientation, low blood pressure, and, in rare cases, seizures are all possible side effects.
What are cancer vaccines?
A cancer vaccine can also contribute to the fight against the disease. A vaccine exposes the immune system to an antigen, which is a foreign protein. The immune system responds by recognizing and removing the antigen or associated molecules. Cancer vaccines are divided into two categories: prevention and treatment.
