FREMONT, CA: Life science laboratories in the United States have witnessed a steady increase in testing volumes, primarily driven by an aging population. However, the availability of qualified lab technicians has not kept pace with the rising demand. The COVID-19 pandemic further exacerbated the need for increased testing and productivity. Fortunately, advancements in modular equipment have made automation accessible even to small laboratories, enabling them to realize the benefits of increased efficiency.

Many laboratory processes were traditionally deemed unsuitable for automation due to their complexity and diverse nature. The return on investment was uncertain, making automation less attractive. However, over the past five years, the emergence of collaborative robot arms, known as cobots and Autonomous Mobile Robots (AMRs), has transformed the landscape. Cobots, designed to work safely alongside humans, can be mounted on AMRs, allowing them to navigate between machines, rooms, or entire facilities.
Modular laboratory automation can be approached in two ways, each offering unique advantages. The first approach involves a cluster of instruments centered around a robot arm with an extended reach. This robot arm transfers samples from one device to another, enabling sequential processing. This configuration optimizes space utilization and cost-effectiveness, as a single robot arm serves multiple pieces of equipment. However, reconfiguring the system and reprogramming the robot can be time-consuming when equipment requirements change.
The second approach focuses on a process-centered geometry, where various test or sample preparation equipment is arranged linearly. Each piece of equipment is associated with a robot arm for machine tending, while a conveyor system transports samples between stations. The robot arm retrieves samples from the conveyor, places them in the test apparatus, waits for the process to complete, and then returns the specimen to the conveyor. Subsequent robots continue the process in the next machine. This approach offers maximum flexibility and ease of reconfiguration, and the conveyor system can be replaced with an AMR for intra-facility sample transportation if needed.
An articulated robot arm can be mounted on an AMR, creating an Autonomous Mobile Manipulator. This configuration allows the robot to pick up samples, load them into an onboard tray, navigate to the desired location, and unload the samples. Combining an articulated arm and AMR enhances mobility and expands the automation possibilities.
While modular automation opens up new possibilities, aligning the automation solution with the laboratory's specific processes is essential. The automation system should adapt to the existing workflow rather than forcing the laboratory to meet its requirements. Vendors prioritizing selling machines over addressing the laboratory's unique needs should be approached cautiously. Additionally, training personnel to operate the automation system should be factored into evaluating benefits. Systems that support popular programming languages offer greater flexibility and ease of integration.
Modular automation allows laboratories to start small and gradually expand their automation capabilities as they gain experience and confidence. While automation brings numerous benefits, manual methods offer adaptability and elasticity in certain situations. Laboratories should be cautious not to become overly reliant on automation systems that limit their flexibility and hinder innovation.
