SVA Consulting: Navigating Life Sciences Firms through Commercialization

Andrew DeMarco, Commercialization Strategist and Principal at SVA Life Sciences, has a simple philosophy: “We believe if you just do the right thing by helping people and solving their problems, at the end of the day ... it will benefit you.”

Perhaps it’s this thinking that has led SVA Life Sciences, a division of SVA Consulting (SVAC), to grow dramatically over the last few years, nearly doubling its business since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The launch of a product is the most critical and vulnerable point in its life cycle. SVA Life Sciences understands that, which is why they developed The Commercialization Journey. By acknowledging and understanding the most pressing questions an organization has leading up to the first product launch, SVA Life Sciences helps biopharmaceutical companies plan and execute the launch of their product and the company that supports it.

“We work as an extension of a client’s team. From establishing new functions and processes to selecting fit-for-purpose systems for a successful launch, we stay with clients throughout The Commercialization Journey including providing ongoing business support services when FTE headcount is thin,” says DeMarco.

SVA Life Sciences is enabled to offer its services through a comprehensive understanding of the challenges that clients experienced through dozens of first launches. The company is part of a diversified independent professional services firm, SVA, and provides business transformation, operational excellence, and business support services.

SVA Life Sciences and Veeva Partnering for Client Success

Veeva pioneered industry cloud solutions for life sciences, working with emerging and established companies to bring products to market faster and more efficiently while maintaining compliance. Its data, software, expertise, and extensive ecosystem of partners support companies’ journeys from R&D through to the commercial market.

“The Veeva Data Cloud solutions are crucial foundations to connect sales, medical, and marketing teams across CRM, data, content, and analytics. Data offerings like Veeva Link help medical affairs and commercial teams understand the medical community including key opinion leaders, regional thought leaders, and community thought leaders,” says DeMarco.

Veeva has become one of the gold standards in its field, and when clients have limited resources and preparedness, they have partners with expertise who can help.

Enter SVA Life Sciences. SVAC helps companies leverage the full potential of Veeva’s systems as a business process and training partner. SVAC supports organizations in implementing, administering, and further developing Veeva cloud solutions and products. One of these products, The Veeva Vault, is the first cloud platform built from the ground up to meet the rigorous content management requirements of the life sciences industry.

Using Veeva’s Commercial and Data Cloud products, SVAC helps clients reduce complexity and adopt an innovative digital culture to better understand and address market needs through unified data and processes. SVAC enables clients to define key milestones, identify potential challenges, and anticipate unforeseen ones.

SVAC helps both emerging life sciences organizations and established pharma companies by formulating a system and data strategy. Its experts then help clients implement relevant Veeva solutions specific to their business processes and software requirements. For the established players, they are assisted in better managing existing systems and processes.

SVAC also enables clients to understand the medical community from both medical affairs and commercial perspectives. Medical affairs teams expedite successful launches and improve patient lives by translating clinical and scientific data to the medical community and bringing critical insights from the practice setting and key opinion leaders back into the company. SVAC configures Veeva products to enable the medical affairs team to place their studies and plans into these systems.

It also creates dashboards, analytics, and reporting to present the details in a user-friendly fashion.

Organizations also need to start thinking about medical science liaison (MSL) deployment early. SVA Life Sciences’ goal is to empower medical affairs teams to thoughtfully design, manage, and deploy medical affairs strategy and function. For example, a client needed to configure an existing customer relationship management (CRM) solution to empower its new MSL team.

Working in collaboration with the client and Veeva, SVAC implemented the medical CRM application. SVAC also developed dashboards to enable the executive team and board of directors to track the MSL’s effectiveness and activities prior to approval.

SVAC Partnership with Acumatica

SVAC, like Veeva, is working to extend software to fit the needs and unique challenges of the life sciences marketplace.

Through its partnership with the cloud-based ERP platform Acumatica, SVAC has developed solutions to help with software validation, ERP-integrated bio banks, and the lot-tracking information that is unique to cell and gene therapy production facilities.

Over 45 Years of Serving People Better

At the core of what SVAC does are the SVA 31 Fundamentals. A process developed to lead the company to “serve people better” through identifying how to work with clients, partners, and each other. Some of these fundamentals are relatively straight forward such as “honor commitments” and “lead by example.” Others are a bit more outside of the box like “be a fanatic about response time” and “run to the problem.” All these fundamentals can be summed up by Fundamental #11 “do the right thing, always.”

“Our 31 Fundamentals remind our team members everyday of what it means to be an effective part of the SVA community and a client advocate,” says Bryan Bechtoldt, President and Principal of SVA Consulting.
