Driven by their flexibility, therapeutic expertise, budget management, and service-oriented model, contract research organizations (CROs) are increasingly crucial to pharmaceutical startups, mid-sized businesses, and virtual biotech companies. Despite this shift to CROs, resource-constrained pharma companies often need assistance finding a partner that can cater to their specific needs regarding available technologies, quality, and timelines.

Offering just that is Symeres, a unique mid-sized contract research and development company that provides integrated research services from the early hit-finding stage to clinical proof of concept. A provider of high-end lab services, it caters to a diverse clientele, ranging from small biotech companies to larger pharma organizations.

While each client has unique challenges, Symeres' team comprising over 600 highly competent scientists, offers a solution that can scale up or down depending on a project's requirements. Its flexible packages accommodate projects with one chemist to as many as tens of full-time equivalents (FTEs). Symeres' ability to quickly adapt to changing project requirements and bring additional processes and R & D capabilities makes it ideal for clients looking for a reliable and flexible partner.

In the currently fragmented marketplace, Symeres is one of the few companies that offer a comprehensive range of services, from early-stage processes to clinical stages, including phase 2b and the preparation of active pharmaceutical ingredients.

Symeres' team has consolidated chemical-process expertise, including high-end analytical and high-throughput experimentation competencies.

For instance, through its strong library synthesis capabilities, Symeres produces numerous molecules for lead optimization for clients with special niche requirements like flow chemistry, chiral chemistry, electrochemistry, or photochemistry. It also provides ADME-Tox evaluation to identify the physiological properties of molecules and, following the recent acquisition of Oncolines, their pharmacological activities in oncology applications.

"Our team is up to date with state-of-the-art pharmaceutical R&D, which allows us to apply the latest and most sustainable processes for our clients," says Eelco Ebbers, CEO of Symeres.

As one of the leading transatlantic small molecule contract research and manufacturing organizations, Symeres possesses comprehensive research capabilities in Europe and the U.S. This enables the company to stay close to clients, operate in the same time zones, and offer co-located research facilities.

Symeres recently drove a project in the medicinal chemistry space where the client sought to develop a compound using an AI-assisted strategy. For this project, Symeres set up a complete hit and lead optimization program and delivered a clinical candidate in three years.

"We offer services in an integrated manner so clients can seamlessly handle their overall project management without hopping from one service to another," states Frank Leemhuis, co-founder and head of corporate development of Symeres.

Recently, Symeres acquired two sites in the U.S. specializing in organic synthesis, innovative lipids, process R&D, and formulation development services. This expansion boosts its value proposition in the small molecule and new modalities space, enabling it to capitalize on the emergence of innovative biotech companies across North America.

Looking ahead, Symeres aims to continue delivering high-quality and customizable R&D services to help resource-constrained R&D teams meet their desired drug discovery and development objectives.
