The Career Trajectory: A Journey of Curiosity and Determination
Born and raised in a lower-middle-class family in Mexico, I had limited access to media and entertainment. However, entering high school opened my eyes to the world's possibilities, where I won a scholarship to study at Pearson College UWC, Vancouver, Canada, driving me to learn quickly and push boundaries. This relentless curiosity and determination have been key to my growth and success in the Consumer Health Care industry.
My journey in CHC started 14 years ago in Novartis, followed by GSK, Merk and Sanofi. During these years, I have worked in various categories like cough & cold, allergy, skin care and pain across local, regional and global roles.
“Integrated marketing is a valuable asset, yet its complexity is magnified in today's evolving landscape.”
My career accelerated by constantly challenging the status quo and embracing new trends, such as advocating for a social media presence with OTC brands over 10 years ago, despite initial hesitations. As another example, working hands-on with my team to build a digital-first campaign based on relevant consumer insights, led to a successful Effie awarded effort.
Having a mindset of innovation and progress, coupled with humbleness, has been crucial in my career. Recognising the rapid pace of change, I stay curious and open to learning, which helps me collaborate effectively and achieve better results.
Challenges in Implementing Unified Marketing Strategies: Navigating Global Strategy Cascading by Embracing Diversity and Flexibility
Global cascading of strategies often faces the challenge of differing market perceptions, with the immediate response being, “My market is different, my brand is different.” Balancing local and global trade strategies is crucial, yet conflicts arise due to a lack of listening to each other's perspectives. While we naturally rely on our own experiences, understanding that everyone holds different pieces of the puzzle is essential. The book “Difficult Conversations” has been instrumental in managing such challenges by emphasising collaboration and viewing diverse viewpoints as complementary.
Accepting that a global strategy may not be perfect, but flexible enough to accommodate local adjustments, fosters a sense of inclusion within teams and allows for the achievement of both global and local objectives.
Unlocking the Power of Emerging Technologies: Promises of Integrated Marketing in the AI Era
Integrated marketing is undoubtedly valuable but also incredibly challenging, given its ever-evolving nature. With the proliferation of digital channels like social media, connected TV and various data sources, connecting all the dots remains a complex task. Even with data from big agencies, gaining a comprehensive 360-degree view, especially in comparison to competitors, is elusive due to the lack of standardised capture methods.
However, AI plays a pivotal role in streamlining data integration across organisations, guiding decision-making and reducing data overload. By optimising data analysis and providing actionable insights, AI has the potential to enhance marketing effectiveness significantly.
Gen AI holds promise in enhancing creativity, as evidenced by recent pilots showcasing AI-generated content and streamlining performance tracking and measurement. By automating tasks such as content or media plan optimisation based on performance, marketers can gain mental availability to focus on strategic insights rather than tactical execution. This vision aligns with the need to alleviate the overwhelm experienced by many post-COVID, leveraging AI to optimise workflows and reclaim mental space for higher-quality output.
Envisioning the Future of Integrated Marketing: Embracing Advancements and Enhancements
Integrated marketing extends beyond media and encompasses a wide range of skills required in today's rapidly evolving landscape. According to a study, marketers now need to master 51 percent more skills compared to a decade ago. Another study states that 70 percent of employees lack interest in their current roles. The challenge of integrated marketing is this skill gap. We need to challenge traditional ways of working to get better at connecting sustainability, AI, equity measurement, consumer experience delivery and reputation management.
It seeks to deliver end-to-end business management to ensure a healthy P&L and brand longevity. Leveraging AI can help connect these dots effectively, but prioritisation is key to avoiding data paralysis. Integrated marketing strategies should focus on prioritised areas to maximise impact and effectiveness.
In my experience, focusing on core strengths and prioritising areas for excellence has been the most successful strategy for businesses. While integration is essential, trying to excel in every aspect can overwhelm and dilute efforts. Instead, having models to integrate key components effectively is crucial. By concentrating on vital areas, businesses can create impactful strategies and leverage AI tools to identify and address priority areas. As the landscape evolves, it will be fascinating to observe how these dynamics continue to shape the game.
Guiding Leaders: Leading with Responsibility with Sustainability in Mind
As we navigate the future, we must become responsible agents of change, considering the limited resources of our planet. Sustainability should be at the forefront of our growth strategies, guiding us to make choices that benefit both our businesses and the world. With advancements in AI, we must also be mindful of its environmental impact, ensuring that its use aligns with our sustainability goals. As leaders, it's our collective responsibility to drive change in a way that fosters a more sustainable and prosperous future for all.
